Believing
that their individual quests would be enriched by the variety that a group
format permits, they began to work collaboratively in 2001. Since then they have showed extensively in
the region.
As
a group, their work covers a wide range of media in two and three dimensions.
The variety of media, textures and styles perfectly suits the complexity and
depth of their challenging subject matter.
Their
exhibits offer both a conjoint effort and an experimental fusion of style and
intellect, combining highly individual approaches into an intriguing and
coherent whole. Satire, whimsy, and personal and political commentary mesh
seamlessly in this celebration of the creative process.
Friesen's wooden masks offer
disturbing images exploring personal identity, memory, dreams, and the
manipulations of contemporary cultural mythology. His approach to steel
structure results in colourful, expressive forms assembled from 'fragments of
reality,' imbued with a delicate energy and apparent weightlessness.
Katz's metaphoric drawings
capture intense, poignant moments of personal history and emotional memory. She
explores the family dynamics and fairy tale mythology we absorb and 'wear' in
our adult lives. The drawings alternate with found object assemblage pieces
which reinforce her theme in an ironic, three dimensional format.
Rosenblatt, a poet, makes no
distinction between creating visual art and poetry; painting and drawing are
other ways of writing poetry. His vivid, whimsical depictions of backyard
animals reveal a dense, mythic 'voluptuous garden' whose charming residents
display very human qualities as they gleefully indulge in their lustful,
predatory pursuits.
Taken
as a whole, their work demonstrates the visual uniqueness of personal, interior
journeys and the universality of inner metaphoric experiences.
